Comedic drama Up in the Air, in the running for Best Picture at this
year’s Oscars, is about man named Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) who
flies 322 days out of the year, working as “career transition
consultant.”

In other words, Bingham helps companies fire people so they don’t have
to strap on a spine to do it themselves. Bingham enjoys his job and
considers the year-round air travel a choice job perk.

Though while on a stopover, Bingham meets a fellow frequent traveler,
Alex Goran (Vera Farmiga), and quickly falls for her. Bingham realizes
for the first time in his life how lonely he really is, and considers
changing his lifestyle.

Director Jason Reitman shot to fame during the 2008 Oscars with Juno,
and hasn’t missed a beat with his latest. Much like Juno, Up in the Air
amuses, enlightens and offers a keen glimpse into human nature, giving
audiences plenty to smile about as he probes deeply emotional topics.

Victims of Bingham’s downsizing appear in montages, showing how they get
through their tough times with the help of their families. And Bingham’s
arguments about marriage with his young assis-tant, Natalie, are sure to
shake your sense of family values to their core.

Reitman ultimately tells Bingham’s story in a light-hearted manner and
even concludes with an open-ended finish scene, eschewing
“Jack-will-get-Jill” clichés. Will Bingham finally settle down? We don’t
know and neither does he.

On a scale of 1 to 10, Up in the Air gets a high-flying 7.5.
